Event Description:
Houston Blues Challenge Springs Forward to Celebrate 20th Anniversary Houston Blues Society moves competition to the spring, with look to the past, present and future of the blues HOUSTON, April 4, 2018 –On the heels of its first-ever International Blues Challenge win in Memphis, the Houston Blues Society is moving its 20th Anniversary Houston Blues Chal-lenge (HBC) to the spring. This year’s special event will spotlight the past, present and future of the blues in a single event at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 15, at Pub Galleria, 5636 Rich-mond. “We wanted to give musical acts, as well as our HBS members who travel to support the musicians, more time to prepare for the trip to Memphis in January. It would also allow acts more time to fundraise,” says Anni Eason, Houston Blues Society President. “Even though we’re having two events almost back to back in one HBS fiscal year—fall and spring—it is important to move this event for both the musicians and the membership.” The event will recognize past winners and culminate with a performance by the first winner to make the “Road to Memphis,” Leonard “Lowdown” Brown, representing the past. Brown, also a songwriter, used the spoken word in music long before the current trend. The future will be represented with a 3 p.m. pre-show by Untitled, the Youth Band that HBS sent to this year’s IBCs. Back to the present will be the Houston Blues Challenge finalists, hoping to make it to Memphis in 2019. Bands include Chuck Kidd and the Kidnapppers and the Mark May Band. Solo/duo acts are Chuck Collins and John Egan. During 2018’s HBCs, the Keeshea Pratt Band won here and then won the International Blues Challenge as the first Houston band to achieve the crown. Admission is $10 Sunday, April 15, with all proceeds going to the Houston Blues Society. Pub Galleria is a full-service restaurant/bar, so food (including crawfish) and drinks are available for purchase throughout the event.
